Clan Stuart of Bute
The Stuarts of Bute are descended from an illegitimate son of Robert II, King of Scots in the 14th Century, known as the ‘Black Stewart.’ They had the responsibility of the Captainship of Rothesay Castle on the Isle of Bute and other offices in both Bute and Arran. Several branches of this Clan have been honoured with noble titles and their presence on the Isle of Bute is still very much in evidence to this day. Their seat on the Island is the magnificent Mount Stuart House, the home of the Marquis of Bute their Chief.
